Congo's Ebola cases surpass 10,000 as fears grow of wider African spread
JUST IN: Ebola cases in Congo surpass 10,000 as fears grow of a wider spread across Africa.
Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have passed ten thousand.
That number makes this one of the largest Ebola outbreaks ever recorded, and it is still growing. Health workers are vaccinating and treating patients in field tents across the affected regions, and you can see that response here. These teams are working to contain a virus that spreads through contact and kills a large share of the people it infects.
The fear now goes beyond Congo's borders. Officials are warning the outbreak could spread more widely across Africa. Congo shares borders with nine countries, and people move across them every day. Containment inside the country is the only thing standing between this outbreak and a regional emergency.
Ten thousand cases, and the count has not stopped.
