Iceland is voting on joining the European Union, and it is genuinely too close to call.

Polling stations have been busy all day, with preliminary turnout running high across the country. And you can see it here, ballots going into the boxes, leopard-print pants and all. Icelanders do democracy with a bit of style.

This is a big moment for a small country. Iceland has flirted with Brussels before, it applied back in 2009 after the financial crash, then shelved the whole thing when the economy recovered. Now the question is back on the ballot, and this time the voters get the final word, not the politicians.

A nation of under four hundred thousand people deciding whether to join a bloc of four hundred and fifty million. Fishing rights, the krona, sovereignty, all of it on one piece of paper.

High turnout in a race this tight means nobody in Reykjavik sleeps easy tonight. The count will tell us who blinked.
