The timing is what makes this so stark. That pause lined up exactly with visits by Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who've been shuttling between the two capitals trying to restart peace talks. They met Putin in Moscow, then Zelensky in Kyiv. And according to the French presidency, the Americans came away telling European officials Russia was showing a new willingness to negotiate after the Duma elections.

So weigh those two facts against each other. A reported openness to talks in the meeting rooms, and missiles over Kyiv the moment the clock ran out. Four and a half years into this war, a three-day pause was the concession, and it did not survive the weekend.
