BREAKING: Multiple shooters open fire at Virginia State University, five people shot and one in critical condition, prompting a campus lockdown.

Five people have been shot at Virginia State University, and police say there were multiple shooters.

It happened early this morning near the Quad Annexes. Officers from Chesterfield County arrived to find five victims with gunshot wounds outside the campus dormitories. All five were taken to hospital. One was initially listed with life-threatening injuries and has since been upgraded to critical. The others are expected to survive.

This is the scene right now, police tape up and a heavy law enforcement presence across campus. The ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office are assisting, and the university is telling everyone to stay clear of the area.

Virginia State is a historically Black university near Richmond, about five thousand seven hundred students. Residence halls opened just a week ago. Classes were set to begin Monday. These students had barely finished orientation when the shooting started, and the suspects have not been named.
