NFL champions Seattle Seahawks sold to Khosla Group for record $9.6 billion
BREAKING: Seattle Seahawks sold to a group led by the Khosla family for a record $9.6 billion, the largest franchise sale in NFL history and the second-highest valuation ever in North American sports.
The Seattle Seahawks just sold for nine point six billion dollars.
That's an NFL record, and the second biggest price tag in North American sports history, behind only the Lakers. The buyers are the Khosla family, Silicon Valley billionaire Vinod Khosla with his wife Neeru and son Neal, and all thirty two league owners waved it through unanimously in Atlanta.
Here's the detail I love. Khosla's own reaction was basically, how often do you get to buy a team that just won the Super Bowl. Fair point. He says the plan is simple, keep winning, think long term. Simple to say, anyway.
The sale honours the wishes of the late Paul Allen, the Microsoft cofounder who bought the Seahawks in 1997 for 194 million and kept them in Seattle. His will said sell the team, give the money to charity. So the maths on this one, from 194 million to 9.6 billion in under thirty years. Not a bad trade to go out on.
