Refereeing body admits judgement error over Haaland derby winner
BREAKING: The Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref admits an 'error of judgement' in awarding Erling Haaland's winning goal in Manchester City's 1-0 derby win at Old Trafford, saying the VAR should have recommended an on-field review.
The referees have just admitted the Manchester derby winner shouldn't have stood.
Pro Ref, the Premier League's refereeing body, says awarding Erling Haaland's goal was an error of judgement. This is the moment in question, Haaland turning in Gvardiol's cross at the back post while Enzo Fernandez dives at the ball right in the middle of the six yard box. Fernandez was offside, and Pro Ref now says the VAR should have recognised the likely impact of his position and sent it to an on-field review. It didn't, and the goal decided the game.
United were told this evening, at Old Trafford of all places to lose one like this. Lisandro Martinez called it an injustice, Michael Carrick said he was confused, and honestly, so was half the country watching those VAR lines.
The apology arrives, a review will follow, and City keep all three points anyway. That's the part United fans will never forgive.
