Spanish fighter jet downs drone breaching Romania's airspace

BREAKING: A Spanish fighter jet has shot down a drone that breached Romania's airspace near the border with Ukraine and Moldova, Romania's defence ministry says.

A Spanish fighter jet shot down a drone inside Romanian airspace this morning.

Romania's defence ministry says the drone crossed in from Moldova and was intercepted at one minute past five local time by an F-18 flying NATO air policing duties, the same aircraft type you can see here. The debris came down in an unpopulated stretch of the Galati region, right up against the Ukrainian border.

This is becoming a pattern, not an incident. Romania shot down its first drone just last month, about a hundred kilometres from Bucharest. On Friday, Italian jets under NATO command downed one over Latvia. Poland and the Baltics have logged the same story. Spanish pilots defending Romanian skies from Russian war spillover is exactly what the alliance was built for, and exactly what it hoped never to need.

Three drone shootdowns over NATO territory in a month. The eastern flank isn't watching this war anymore, it's touching it.
