These are the pictures from the scene, groups of men, faces covered, standing across the access roads under the banner of stop the boats. Choosing Dover is the point. It's where the small boats land, and it's where the lorries roll, so blocking it makes the whole country feel the squeeze at once.

Kent Police will be under enormous pressure to clear those roads fast, because every hour Dover sits closed, freight backs up along the motorway and ferries sit idle in the Channel. And politically, this lands on a government already being hammered over immigration from every direction.

Britain's front door to Europe is closed, by men who won't show their faces.
