UK PM says RAF base incidents ‘likely coordinated’ by Iran
JUST IN: UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham says incidents at RAF Fairford and RAF Molesworth were 'likely coordinated' by Iran, vowing further sanctions against Tehran.
Britain is now pointing the finger at Iran for incidents at two of its own air bases.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament today that what happened at RAF Fairford and RAF Molesworth was highly likely coordinated by Tehran. You can see him here, making the statement to the House.
Fairford matters. It's the base American bombers fly from when they operate out of the UK, and Molesworth hosts US intelligence work. If Iran really did reach onto British soil and touch those two sites, that's not harassment, that's a message.
Burnham's answer is more sanctions on Tehran, plus a crackdown on the criminal networks and the money that allegedly did the dirty work. That last part is the tell. Governments say criminal networks when they mean hired local hands, which is exactly how these operations stay deniable.
So here's where we are. A British Prime Minister just stood up and accused Iran of coordinating attacks on bases used by American forces, in the middle of an already burning region. Sanctions are the response for now. The question is whether sanctions are where this stops.
